About the Exhibition

For the opening exhibition of the Gifu Museum of Modern Art, Toko Gallery, we have selected about 30 representative works from the Toko Shinoda Collection of over 1,000 pieces that have been acquired. The exhibition showcases avant-garde calligraphy works created shortly after the war when Toko was active as a calligrapher, works from the 1970s-90s when she established her unique style known as "Toko Sumi-e," and works from the 2000s when her refined ink expression reached new heights. Also on display are later works that incorporate Japanese waka, reflecting Japan's aesthetic essence, marking a return to text in her artwork and presenting a new expression through Toko's unique abstraction. This exhibition introduces the long journey of Toko's creation, offering an opportunity to enjoy the depth and breadth of the Toko Collection.
