About the Exhibition

Working in the genre of suiboku, Toko says that, as she pursues the infinity of the color black and the white space around the ink, what is the hardest to attain is a white that feels truly tranquil and beautiful. A line of black sumi ink across a sheet of white washi paper endows the whiteness of the paper with a new kind of beauty through the depth of the sumi. A line of white gofun (shell-powder pigment) brushed across a surface of black sumi, likewise, deepens the hue of the black.
This exhibit takes up the “white” along with the black in Toko’s works, and considers the eternal white and black that Toko finds so exciting and awesome.
