About the Exhibition
The great appeal of Toko Shinoda’s abstract works is the tension-filled spatial composition and intersection of bold and clear-cut black strokes, but another feature is the restrained use of color.
For Toko, whose career began in calligraphy’s world of monotones, it was inevitable that she would use sumi ink from among numerous colors to express many different colors and forms. The colors that she uses together with sumi ink include gold, silver, vermillion, and blue-green, but among them vermillion is one that plays a major role.
This exhibition presents works that introduce Toko’s lively and pulsating use of vermillion, forming striking contrasts with sumi black.
