About the Exhibition
Twenty-six works, mainly done on washi paper, introduce the shades of sumi for which Toko Shinoda, Japan’s leading abstract ink painting artist, is known. Three works that entered the museum’s collection in 2008 were included. Her art renders the invisible into visible form. The invisible may be subtle redolence, faint light, wind, sound, and thoughts crossing through her mind. Through sumi and water she commits the thoughts and fleeting images of the mind to paper. Released by water, sumi takes on life, spreading over paper, assuming form in blurs, shading, and feathering.
